There they are, waiting.
Waiting to see us, the practice nurse.
New cases and familiar faces,
Patiently waiting and watching the screen, because they want to be seen.
And we’ll see them,
Day in, day out, day in, day out.
We’re the heartbeat of the practice.
And we’ll see them as a person.
Not an illness or a problem, or just another routine test.
No, we’ll see them.
And be with them with courage and commitment as they improve their health, learn new ways, rise and fall, face the days.
There they are, waiting.
It’s nothing really, he says again,
Just a niggle, just a pain, mustn’t grumble.
But you can to me, I’ll listen with compassion and I’ll always see the person
With the illness you weren’t expecting and you find it all perplexing.
But I’m there to care, to stand beside, to help, to guide.
There they are, waiting.
Oh, I’m being silly, I know it’s nothing really.
And to me it’s just one more today.
One more needle in a tiny arm and I promise it will do no harm.
And she trusts me nervously,
As I competently and gently, protect her precious baby.
That’s how we do our jobs, with skill and precision.
Carefully making each complex decision.
As we take the tests, communicate tasks, work with our partners, that’s the daily ask.
We measure and weigh, monitor and jab. And we soothe and we dress and we bandage and we stop…
And listen.
To those stories and worries, and troubles and woes.
As we look after you from your heads to your toes.
And it’s nothing, really It’s what we do.
For 70 years we’ve been here for you.
It’s our vocation, to care for the nation.
Here we are, waiting.
And when they say thank-you and you turn and say, “oh it’s nothing, really”.
For them, it’s everything.
So be proud of what we did today.
